 Mazda 6 Wagon, 2013

The Mazda is reaching for greater heights in a flagship for a new generation and a new level of driving pleasure. With the distinct design, intuitive functionality and exceptional responsiveness that are essential elements of every Mazda. But also blending a dynamic, emotional appeal with the composure mandatory for Mazda's top model. This, of course, posed challenges for designers and engineers as they sought to balance potentially conflicting attributes like form and function, performance and efficiency, comfort and practicality, uniqueness and mass appeal. And in the all-important reputation-making CDsegment, no less.

The SKYACTIV powertrains provide unrivalled linearity and responsiveness. They're a perfect match for the new Mazda 6's equally precise handling, founded on agile yet stable steering and suspension feedback that puts the driver in absolute control. This model marks the latest evolution of Sustainable Zoom-Zoom, Mazda's long-term vision to develop technology for exceptionally safe and environmentally friendly vehicles that also provide the greatest possible driving pleasure. To deliver top-class fuel economy, the all-new Mazda 6 combines the lightweight design common to all SKYACTIV components with uniquely innovative engines and transmissions and Mazda's unique i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system.

It's remarkably safe thanks to the SKYACTIV-Body, whose highly rigid structure absorbs impact energy and channels it away from the cabin for segment-leading crash protection. Add in the enviable range of active safety technology, and you have an environment where the driver can concentrate on the driving experience while passengers relax and enjoy the ride.

Design-Moving People
As Mazda's next flagship, the all-new Mazda 6 had to be even better than it's predecessor - a model that already achieved top ratings from European customers as well as the media. With striking looks and harmonious forms and textures alongside the uniqueness that precludes the Mazda badge.

At the same time, it needed to attract the broad customer appeal obligatory for CD-segment sedans and wagons in Europe. Mazda designers undertook this complex challenge, working closely with company engineers to make their visions both feasible and highly functional. The result is a new Mazda 6 that will delight customers with its combination of superior build quality and functional, practical beauty that should continue to please the senses well into the future. One look at the all-new Mazda 6 should eradicate any doubts about the skills of Mazda's designers, long known for their unique ability to express motion when shaping vehicles. Their latest evolution is called "KODO - Soul of Motion", a design theme inspired by the movements of animals in the wild - and the look for the new generation of Mazdas. Mazda believes it has captured KODO's purest essence in the all-new Mazda 6, the production model born of the Mazda Takeri concept first showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show in late 2011. Sedan or wagon, it combines a muscular anatomy and vitality with a functional allure that is certain to gain broad market appreciation - and a level of quality that sets it apart.

The Exterior: Shapes that enrich the senses
This is a big achievement in asegment that is so competitive in Europe, representing 6.2 % of the European passenger car market. When designing the Mazda 6, the aim was to come up with a body that clearly sets the vehicle apart from conventional thinking, as unveiled on the Takeri and Shinari concepts, while still furnishing the vehicle with unmistakable dignity and purpose.

The prominent fenders and compactlooking cabin set towards the rear highlight the large-diameter 19-inch aluminium wheels, which only add to the car's composed exterior. The five sets of contoured spokes underline the sense of dynamism and light, effortless motion. And they don't just look good, either. Engineers worked with designers to improve stiffness and thus resistance to deformation. The result is superior handling coupled with reduced noise, vibration and harshness.

The prominent fenders and compact looking cabin set towards the rear highlight the large-diameter 19-inch aluminium wheels, which only add to the car's composed exterior. The five sets of contoured spokes underline the sense of dynamism and light, effortless motion. And they don't just look good, either. Engineers worked with designers to improve stiffness and thus resistance to deformation. The result is superior handling coupled with reduced noise, vibration and harshness. In what is undoubtedly some of their best work yet, Mazda's world-class design team came up with distinctive bodylines whose impressions vary - a sence of speed here, more relaxed there - depending on how the light falls. In doing so, they focused on the interplay between light and shadow, designing a car that one never tires of looking at.

The all-new Mazda 6 is the company's first production model to incorporate LEDs and a new halo ring light into the headlamps. The ring, which surrounds each headlight, accentuates the forward looking stance and mature fearlessness, while the LEDs visually extend the signature wings outwards, adding to the sense of speed.

The Interior: Stunning simplicity
Open the door of the Mazda 6, and this exciting yet dignified consistency continues on the inside. Interior designers paid meticulous attention to detail, enhancing shapes and textures as well as appearances. What they came up with is a harmonious, uncluttered space with an immediately perceptible level of genuine quality and tasteful coordination fitting for a flagship: An interior as stunning as it is sensible.

The various controls received the same finishing. The produces a clean, consistent look throughout the all new Mazda 6 while at the same time making knobs and switches easier to locate visually and therefore operate. Parts like the door handles were given a handpolished aluminium look, with soft materials used for elements that occupants touch the most, such as the steering wheel and armrest. The use of hard plastics was kept to a minimum, with a high-quality finish that underscores the refinement of the Mazda 6 interior while offering practical benefits to driver and passenger alike.

 Jaguar XJR, 2014

The first 'R' model in the latest generation of the XJ range, and the latest in a long line of high-performance, luxurious Jaguar sports saloons, the XJR incorporates bespoke chassis and aerodynamic developments to create the most focused, agile and responsive member of the XJ family.
Seamless performance is provided by a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine that boasts 550PS and 680Nm. Subtle exterior styling cues, which also optimise the flow of air over and around the car, have given the Jaguar XJR a distinctively assertive appearance. A front splitter, special 'R' bonnet louvres and quad tailpipes also add to the car's stealthy yet purposeful demeanour.

Combined with an eight-speed transmission that extends the performance characteristics of the car, the XJR is capable of accelerating from zero to 60mph in 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 174mph (280km/h).

The unique 20-inch lightweight forged alloy 'Farallon' wheels are shod with specially developed Pirelli rubber, giving the Jaguar XJR a muscular stance and increasing its grip and stability. Allied to the tyre technology are tuned dampers and spring rates which both optimise the handling and stability of the car when driven at speed and increase the feeling of connectivity with the road surface, providing a controlled, supple ride which still retains the expected Jaguar XJ ride comfort.

The settings for the active electronic differential and Dynamic Stability Control system have been calibrated in order to allow the enthusiastic driver to make the most of the huge performance potential of the XJR. In addition, the steering hydraulics and calibration have been engineered to enhance steering feel, response and feedback under all driving conditions.

The car's dynamic intent is underlined by the technical palette of materials used on the interior. This includes optional semi-aniline leather and veneers in either Carbon Fibre or Piano Black. Providing a further unique touch is a choice of contrasting colour stitching to bring out the design of the front and rear seats.

5.0-litre supercharged V8
The XJR features Jaguar's acclaimed 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine in its most potent form, matched to a responsive eight-speed transmission system. This all-new combination provides an exceptional blend of pure performance, driver involvement and exceptional levels of control.
The all-aluminium quad-cam engine delivers not only exhilarating performance but also tremendous efficiency thanks to the technologies incorporated into it, including spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) and dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT).

The high-pressure die-cast lightweight aluminium block is stiffened with cast-iron liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps, providing refinement to match its power. The four-valve cylinder heads are constructed from recycled aluminium, between them sitting the Roots-type twin vortex supercharger fed by two intercoolers, which feature their own water-cooling circuit to reduce the temperature of the pressurised air thereby optimising power and efficiency.

The result is a 0-60mph time of 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds) and an electronically-limited top speed of 174mph (280km/h).

Eight-speed Transmission
Maximising the benefit of the engine calibration is the eight-speed automatic transmission, which has been engineered based on learnings from the development of the high-performance XFR-S saloon. This transmission system brings out the sporting nature of the Jaguar XJR while still maintaining the car's composure in town and in low-speed driving environments.

When operating in automatic mode, the transmission can detect the manner in which the car is being driven by monitoring acceleration and braking, cornering forces, throttle and brake pedal activity, road load and kickdown request. On detecting a more enthusiastic driving style, the transmission will automatically make the gearshifts more aggressive and move the shift-up point higher in the rev range. Steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles also give the driver higher levels of control.

Corner Recognition senses when the car is negotiating a bend, the transmission holding the correct gear for the exit. The transmission will also recognise when the car is performing a series of overtaking manoeuvres requiring rapid changes in throttle position and, rather than change up, remain in a lower gear ready for the next demand for acceleration.

The eight-speed transmission also allows the XJR to be offered as standard with Jaguar's Intelligent Stop/Start system. This automatically shuts down the engine when the car comes to a halt and the brake pedal is depressed. When the brake is released, the system will restart the engine in less time than it takes for the driver's foot to move to the accelerator.

A twin solenoid system, it allows for 'change of mind' functionality, bringing the engine back up to speed even during its run-down phase if, for instance, the car is coming to a halt at a junction and the driver sees an opportunity to join the traffic flow.

Dynamics
The dynamic characteristics of the Jaguar XJR have been informed by the engineering development of the XFR-S, the result being an incredibly agile, responsive and involving luxury super saloon.

Both front and rear suspension systems have been carefully tuned at Jaguar's testing centre at the legendary Nürburgring, the high-speed Rockingham circuit in England, the roads around the Gaydon Research and Development centre and in north Wales.

Jaguar's Adaptive Dynamics system actively controls vertical body movement, roll and pitch rates through the use of continuously variable dampers. The system monitors driver inputs and the road conditions, adjusting damper rates in response up to 500 times a second to optimise stability and agility. The driver's selection of Dynamic Mode offers enhanced body control through moving the damping rates to the firmer end of the available range.

The Jaguar active electronic differential - which can apply full locking torque almost instantaneously when necessary - has been calibrated in order to exploit the high levels of grip offered by the wide rear tyres, the more precisely controlled suspension and the engine output. Working in parallel with the differential, the 'Trac DSC' setting of the Dynamic Stability Control system now offers the enthusiastic driver more opportunity to explore the outer edges of the handling envelope while nevertheless providing a discreet safety net.

The Design
Reflecting the changes under the skin, the appearance of the Jaguar XJR has been subtly modified in order to allow the car to achieve its full potential.

The 'R' spec side sills, unique to the XJR, serve to create a sharp break-off point between the bodywork and the road surface in order to keep the airflow attached to the car's sides for as long as possible.
Rear lift is also reduced through the fitment of a bootlid-mounted lip spoiler to manage the airflow off the top rear surface of the car, while the special 'R' bonnet louvres aid in aerodynamics and engine cooling.

The five-spoke, lightweight Farallon forged alloy wheels provide the XJR with a purposeful, broad shouldered stance and come as standard in either Sparkle silver or Technical grey finishes. The assertive appearance of the Jaguar XJR is further enhanced with a Sport pack grille with chrome surround and black mesh.

The XJR is fitted as standard with a 380W, 12-speaker surround-sound system from British audio experts Meridian. Recognised by audiophiles as a leader in audio reproduction and fidelity, the system uses digital signal processing to create a sound field that is second to none. An optional 825W, 18-speaker system features Meridian's proprietary Trifield System which places every occupant at the centre of their own perfectly focused surround-sound arena.

 Hyundai Equus, 2014

The Hyundai Motor America introduced the redesigned 2014 Equus premium luxury sedan in a North American debut at the 2013 New York International Auto Show with enhancements to exterior and interior design, vehicle dynamics, material selection, driver technology displays and advanced safety features. Hyundai Equus has been an impressive success story for Hyundai; so far this year, Equus is the number-one shopped premium luxury sedan, well ahead of Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, Audi A8, Lexus LS, and Jaguar XJ according to industry shopping analysis by Compete.

The Exterior Design
The 2014 Equus exterior enhancements convey a premium-sport design message, starting with a new 19-inch turbine-blade alloy wheel design in a polished silver finish that relays motion whether parked or on the open highway. The front grille chrome bars are thinner, with sharper contrast to the blacked-out portions of the grille for a sportier look. The front fascia also has been redesigned, with the former chrome accents removed in favor of a modern premium appearance that includes lower fascia opening strakes. The headlamps offer jeweled design elements and include chrome contrasted with black-out finishes for a distinctive appearance. New LED fog lamps are now standard. Side mirrors have been redesigned for enhanced aerodynamics and tail lamp graphics move to a more horizontal theme.

The Interior Design
Hyundai engineers wanted the 2014 Equus interior to perfectly complement the enhancements to its exterior. Thus, the themes of premium and performance again greet the driver behind the wheel. The entire instrument panel and center stack have been redesigned with more premium materials and an ergonomically-correct layout, with new button iconography for quicker and easier feature recognition. The center console and shift lever reveal more premium material selection and contemporary premium-luxury design cues. Steering wheel control layout has been improved, with new low-sheen button designs and icons. Similarly, rear passengers will enjoy a new rear console and button layout, with available dual 9.2-inch, high-resolution, adjustable seatback video screens to enjoy movies, audio media, HVAC or seating functions. Rear passengers can even search restaurant locations and provide navigation system directions directly to the driver's navigation screen.

The Vehicle Dynamics
2014 Hyundai Equus driving dynamics also have been revised to minimize traditional ride and handling compromises, with Normal and Sport modes each taking on a more differentiated ride and handling character. The air suspension was recalibrated: Sport mode receives more controlled damping, while Normal mode receives slightly enhanced ride comfort while retaining a well-controlled handling demeanor. The front suspension bushings were also revised to enhance suspension function. For those customers that experience adverse weather conditions such as ice and snow, a new Snow mode function was added to the drive mode system, for both safety and ease of control in challenging road conditions.

On winding country and mountain roads, the Equus benefits from the precise wheel articulation delivered by its five-link front and rear suspension geometry. This geometry is maximized through Continuous Damping Control (CDC), which continually monitors road and driving dynamics and optimizes damping force accordingly. The standard 19-inch alloy wheel and tire package with staggered width tires (P245/45R19 front P275/40R19 rear) offers excellent grip and precise control.

Technologies
All Equus driver-interface displays have been improved for 2014, with a larger, 7-inch Thin-film Transistor (TFT) LCD center cluster display for Signature models, a large 12.3-inch, fully-digital TFT LCD center cluster display for Ultimate models, and a larger, standard 9.2-inch center instrument panel LCD display. New, dual high-resolution 9.2-inch rear seat entertainment monitors have been fitted in place of the former single monitor for rear passengers in the Ultimate model. All of Hyundai Equus' new displays are larger and more legible, featuring premium-quality, high-resolution graphics. The Ultimate model's larger, fully-digital LCD display now offers various driver menus that can be accessed directly via steering wheel haptic dial control, helping to keep the driver's hands on the wheel for minimal driving distraction.

The climate control system now offers three distinct cabin temperature zones for driver, passenger, and rear passengers. The standard smart cruise control system has been enhanced to include a full 0-mph stop-and-start function for use in stop-and-go traffic. The smart proximity key now includes both key-fob and card-key types of vehicle entry for greater driver convenience. Ultimate models now feature an automatic power door closure assist function; once a door manually approaches full closure, a power function slowly and quietly ensures the door is fully secured for peace of mind. Also on the Ultimate model, both rear outboard passengers now have power lumbar support.

Powerful 5.0-Litter TAU V8 Engine
The 2014 Equus is powered by Hyundai's 5.0-liter Tau DOHC V8 engine, producing 429 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 376 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm, with a higher specific output (85.8 hp/liter) than its normally-aspirated premium luxury competitors. The Tau V8 engine creates this high output level while retaining exceptionally smooth power delivery throughout its rpm range, without the turbo lag and surge exhibited by some forced-induction engines.

The 5.0-liter Tau also features direct injection technology. This high-pressure direct injection system (over 2,200 psi) dramatically increases power and torque, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The 5.0-liter Tau has a high 11.5:1 compression ratio for greater thermal efficiency and output. It also has a bed plate for improved block rigidity and lower NVH, as well as camshaft carriers and a roller timing chain to improve valvetrain stability.

This V8 engine offers premium engine technologies, including Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), a tuned variable induction system, and low-friction diamond-like coatings (DLC) on piston skirts, rings and tappets. Even with these impressive power increases, fuel economy is estimated at 15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined.

GENEROUS FEATURE PACKAGING
For 2014, Equus Signature and Ultimate packages are both so generously equipped that no factory options are available. The ultimate buyers benefit from the following new standard features added to all Hyundai Equus models:
  •     Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
  •     Smart Cruise Control (with added 0-mph stop/start capability)
  •     New LED fog lamps
  •     Rear Cross-traffic Alert
  •     Additional "card-type" proximity key entry
  •     Blue Link telematics capability
  •     Navigation system with 9.2-inch LCD screen (formerly 8.0-inch)
  •     Three-zone climate control system (formerly two-zone type)
