 Peugeot 308 SW, 2014

The Peugeot's engineers and designers have conceived and designed a grand dynamic estate car, with a low, classy and sporty allure. Taking the Peugeot i-Cockpit from the hatchback version, the new Peugeot 308 SW presents an innovative interior, resolutely modern and refined. Benefitting from the high flexibility of the new EMP2 platform, the new Peugeot 308 SW makes the most of its generous dimensions to provide a level of interior spaciousness and boot volume among the best in the segment. The boot also benefits from exemplary functionality and modularity.

Virtuous design (reduced weight, the use of innovative materials) and the use of new economical and efficient engines allows the Peugeot 308 SW to claim benchmark fuel consumption and emissions figures while also delivering unprecedented driving enjoyment for an estate car. The extensive range of equipment and high level of quality place the new Peugeot 308 SW among the best in its segment, supporting the ambitions for the brand and its move up-market.

A revitalised estate market in the C segment
Peugeot has been present in the C estate segment, where the new Peugeot 308 SW competes, for decades. Since the arrival of the 304 estate in 1969, every generation of the 300 series has included a successful estate variant.

The proportion of estates in the C segment is stable having has represented 10% of segment in Europe for many years. The appearance and then increased importance of crossovers and MPVs in the segment has not affected the proportion of estates.

A fluid and dynamic design
As with the hatchback, Peugeot's designers wanted to give preference to simplicity, balance and fluidity in the style. For the new Peugeot 308 SW, no pointless features, no ostentatious aggressiveness but rather an importance placed on quality in the way that materials and finishers are handled.

The front end of the new Peugeot 308 SW shares its character with the hatchback. So there is a grille framed in chrome and headlamps handled with great finesse to retain the brand's expressive and emblematic feline look. The Full LED technology (31 LEDs per headlamp), fitted as standard on the upper trim levels, provides a technological and distinctive lighting signature.

The profile of the Peugeot 308 SW is fluid and slender. Benefiting from the extended wheelbase (+11 cm compared to the hatchback) and rear overhang (+22 cm compared to the hatchback), the new Peugeot 308 SW clearly takes its place among the most dynamic and balanced estates in the segment.

The fluid profile is highlighted by a superb chrome window finisher surrounding the entire lateral glazed area. For the large rear quarter light, this finisher is in one piece and with varying crosssection. This technical and stylistic feat is usually found only on some vehicles from the segments above and underlines the refined dynamism in its profile.

The drop in the roof line, the angle formed at the back with the rear screen strengthens further the dynamism of the profile. Finally, the perfect integration of the aluminium longitudinal roof bars, discrete and elegant, completed the positioning of the new Peugeot 308 SW in the very exclusive world of exceptional estate cars.

The rear end, wide and slender, contributes towards the sporty impression of the new Peugeot 308 SW. The rear lamps, flowing round from the sides as on the hatchback, adopt an unusual and very technological C-form lighting signature through the use of 42 opalescent LEDs. With three more LEDs in each lamp unit for the brake lamp function, there are no less than 48 LEDs in the rear lamps. This signature, the shape of which enhances the vehicle's posture, recalls those on the 508 SW and 508 RXH, placing the new Peugeot 308 SW among the brand's family of great estate cars.

The drop in the roof line, the handling of the rear spoiler, the perfect integration of the 3rd brake lamp, taken from the 508 SW, the flush roof bars as far apart as possible, all strengthen the impression of width on the new Peugeot 308 SW.

A modern and bright interior
The interior design of the new Peugeot 308 SW is astonishingly pure, modern and technological.
It is based on an innovative concept for the instruments and controls: the Peugeot i-Cockpit. It is made up of four elements : a compact steering wheel for intense dynamic sensations, a head-up instrument panel so that information can be read without taking your eyes off the road, an enhancing tall centre console and a large 9.7" touch screen for an intuitive drive.

The quality of materials, the textiles used, the rigour of assembly and construction, have all been defined to place the new Peugeot 308 SW in the premium world. So the dashboard is fully padded, the steering wheel is trimmed with full grain leather from the 2nd trim level and the gloss black and satin chrome inserts are found throughout the cabin in areas used by the customer.

The near absence of buttons combined with the use of high quality materials, brings a purity unprecedented in the market.

A successful cabin arrangement
As with the hatchback, the new Peugeot 308 SW uses the PSA Group's new EMP2 platform. This "Efficient Modular Platform" allows considerable flexibility in configuration and settings, particularly for length. So the wheelbase is extended by two notches compared to the hatchback, making another 11 cm, used entirely for space at the rear, particularly for knee room, and for the boot volume. Access to the rear seats is optimised by the opening of the wider rear doors and by moving the rear seats back by 29mm.

The rear overhang is extended by 22 cm compared to the hatchback, allowing perfect arrangement of the rear, shared between:
  • a big increase in the depth of the boot, the sign of a very generous volume ;
  • a rear bumper that is slightly more prominent than on the hatchback, for better safety and protection of the body.
A compact and spacious estate
With a length of 4585 mm, width of 1804 mm and height of 1471 mm, the new Peugeot 308 SW offers ideal dimensions to allow it to meet the fundamental expectations of estate customers in the segment, particularly as regards the spaciousness of the interior and the volume of the boot.

The new Peugeot 308 SW's generous dimensions (though still normal for the segment) allow it to offer boot figures among the best on the market. The boot volume below the parcel shelf is remarkable at 610 dm3 VDA 210 (equal to 660 litres) made up of:
  •     556 dm3 VDA 210 (or 590 litres) above the boot floor
  •     54 dm3 VDA 210 (or 70 litres) spread among the storage spaces below the boot floor
A perfectly flat boot in no time
For easy and intuitive use, the new Peugeot 308 SW is fitted as standard with "Magic Flat" rear seats. This system allows instant folding of both parts of the rear seat by operating two controls easily accessible on the sides of the boot. Thanks to the automatic lowering of the rear seat cushions, the "magic" result is that a flat floor is obtained providing a total volume of 1660 dm3 VDA 214, made up of:
  •     1606 dm3 VDA above the carpet
  •     54 dm3 VDA in storage areas below the carpet
The success of this arrangement is not only in the volumes. The new Peugeot 308 SW benefits from a remarkably practical and useable boot:
  • the boot aperture, well finished, is of simple shape that benefits from the loading width, more than 1.06m up to the rear shelf
  • the length of the boot up to the rear seats is 1.07m
  • with a difference in height between the sill and the boot floor of only 33mm, the boot sill is among the lowest in the market, facilitating loading and unloading
  • the boot sides are perfectly upright and the intrusion of the rear wheel arches is minimal. Spaces can be arranged with removable dividers either side of the boot. An elastic strap on the left hand side trim allows small objects to be held
  • aluminium boot rails are available. they have four removable metal hooks for lashing voluminous objects
  • the retractable luggage cover is easy to use
  • under the boot carpet, storage is provided for the luggage cover and the removable lashing hooks in dedicated housings

 Opel Astra OPC Extreme, 2015

The Opel Astra OPC Extreme, which makes its world premiere at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, is a real race-bred performance car. Developed on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the most challenging race track in the world, it is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo engine with over 300 hp and equipped with all the key high-tech components from its racing peer, the Opel Astra OPC Cup. The Astra OPC Extreme was developed directly from the Cup version and brings pure racing technology to the road. If public reaction is as positive as expected, Opel plans a low-volume production run for the super sporty, street-legal Extreme.

Over 300 hp will be unleashed from under the Extreme's carbon fiber hood. Its 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine, with direct injection and variable camshaft phasing, is quite simply the most powerful four-cylinder unit Opel has ever produced. The all-aluminum engine is mated to a slick, six-speed manual gearbox transmitting power through a limited-slip differential. This race-proven powerplant will have an easy time of it with the OPC Extreme, because the super sporty car is 100 kilograms lighter than a conventional Astra OPC thanks to its high-quality, carbon fiber components.

Used in Formula 1 racing to reduce weight, carbon composite is incorporated throughout the Extreme. This high-strength, ultra-light material is used for the aerodynamically-optimized rear wing, the diffuser, front spoiler, hood, suspension cross-bracing, the engine cover, complete wheels, rear wheelhouse ventilation and roof. The carbon wheels are 20 kilograms lighter than their aluminum counterparts. This is weight saving in a decisive area because unsprung mass is substantially reduced - much to the joy of engineers and driving fun of drivers. The inhouse manufactured carbon fiber roof is almost as light as a feather. It weighs just 2.6 kilograms, compared to a steel roof's 9.3 kilograms, and noticeably lowers the Astra Extreme's center of gravity. The fenders are made of aluminum and weigh only 800 grams a piece instead of 2.2 kilograms in steel.

The weight reduction in key areas greatly improves agility, overall handling and, of course, the car's power-to-weight ratio. As a result, the street-legal Extreme sweeps through fast curves as playfully and quickly as its racing brother in the Nürburgring Endurance Championship (VLN). Opel has also given the Extreme breathtaking stopping power to match, with a Brembo six-piston brake system including 370 mm diameter discs up front race car. Ultra high-performance, 245/35, 19-inch tires, specially developed for the Extreme, also play a key role and give almost as much grip as those on the race car. In addition, the chassis (spring/damper) is adjustable, just like in a real touring car racer.

The pursuit of uncompromised performance continues in the design of the Extreme'S cabin: the back seats are out and a safety roll bar is in. The driver and co-driver are perfectly positioned in specially-designed Recaro bucket seats, complete with six-point safety belts from Schroth. In the Astra OPC Extreme, the crew doesn't just sit in the car, they are fully integrated as part of the vehicle itself. The driver also has the tactile pleasure of gripping a superb, carbon-fiber-reinforced, suede-covered steering wheel with fine yellow decorative stitching. Opel Motorsport's core color also dresses up the Astra OPC Extreme elsewhere, for instance in the exclusively designed logo and as lacquer on the side sills and front spoiler lip.

The Astra GTC body format - the base model for the OPC Extreme - ideally embodies Opel's sculptural design philosophy. Its flowing, sculpted shapes and precise accents blend into dramatic proportions. The Astra OPC Extreme's multi-layer paint lacquer is combined with high-quality decal details to give a three-dimensional effect, further emphasizing the car's clean edges, bold lines and athletic proportions.

Mini Cooper, 2015

The evolutionary refinement of its design signals the more mature character of the new model, reflected in a significant optimisation of such aspects as space, safety, fittings, materials and finish quality as well as sportiness and ride comfort. The enhancement of product substance embodied in the new edition of the MINI derives directly from the BMW Group's outstanding development expertise and takes on a more extensive form than ever before in the history of the brand. A new generation of engines increases driving fun and efficiency, and there is a wider selection of innovative driver assistance systems as well as MINI Connected infotainment facilities. LED headlamps, the MINI Head-Up Display, Emergency Call and the MINI Connected XL Journey Mate with Real Time Traffic Information are other highlights in the equipment program only previously found in higher vehicle segments, further underscoring the premium character of the new MINI.

3 entirely newly developed power units featuring MINI Twin Power Turbo Technology are available to choose from at the market launch of the new MINI in spring 2014. The new MINI Cooper has a 3-cylinder petrol engine with a peak output of 100 kW/136 bhp. The 4-cylinder petrol engine of the MINI Cooper S mobilises 141 kW/192 bhp. The new MINI Cooper D is powered by a 85 kW/116 bhp 3-cylinder diesel engine. Another new feature: the standard 6-speed manual transmission, along with a 6-speed automatic transmission that is optionally available for all engine variants. Increased engine efficiency, extensive Minimalism technology, optimised weight and enhanced aerodynamic properties go together to produce a reduction in fuel consumption figures of up to 27 per cent as compared to predecessor models. The new front-runner in terms of efficiency is the MINI Cooper D with an average fuel consumption of 3.5 to 3.6 litres per 100 kilometres (EU test cycle figures, dependent on tyre format selected). All model variants of the new MINI also meet the EU6 exhaust emission standard.

The Classic MINI proportions, the characteristic three-way separation of body corpus, all-round greenhouse and roof together with a new take on hallmark design features define the exterior of the new model, which has grown by some ten centimetres in length. Its interior offers extended spatial comfort on all four seats as well as a luggage compartment volume expanded by 51 litres to a total of 211 litres.

A new display and operating concept combines the typical brand-style look and feel of the cockpit with optimised functionality. Road speed and engine speed along with other key driving-related information is shown in the newly designed instrument cluster on the steering column. The characteristic central instrument with an optional colour display of up to 8.8 inches in size provides feedback on operations performed using the MINI Controller in the centre console as well as giving visual feedback on driving condition and on numerous functions activated by the driver.

The new MINI Driving Modes allow an individual set-up involving not just the characteristic curve of the accelerator and steering but also engine acoustics, and in the MINI Cooper S - where the relevant features are fitted - ambient lighting, the shift times of the automatic transmission and the characteristics of Dynamic Damper Control, the latter system being optionally available for the first time. The modes SPORT and GREEN can be activated in addition to the standard MID mode. In conjunction with an automatic transmission, the efficiency-oriented GREEN mode also features a coasting function with decoupled drivetrain.

The range of optional driver assistance systems has been significantly expanded. For the first time there is an extendible Head-Up Display above the steering column available for the new MINI, a Driving Assistant system including camera-based active cruise control, collision and pedestrian warning, high beam assistant and road sign detection, and also a parking assistant and a rear view camera.

Unique within the competitive environment, the MINI in-car infotainment program likewise moves into a whole new dimension. As the first car in its segment the new MINI can be fitted with a SIM card which is permanently installed in the car. This means that Emergency Call with automatic detection of vehicle location and accident severity is available, as well as MINI Teleservices. Functions which can be integrated in the vehicle via apps in the areas of social networks and infotainment are now available for both the Apple iPhone and for smartphones using the operating system Android.

The exterior design: unmistakable proportions, striking lines, high-end highlights.
The new MINI sets out to continue the global success story of the first ever premium automobile in the small car segment. At the same time it carries forward the tradition of the classic MINI that stretches back over more than 50 years. Its design reflects these historical roots as well as an evolutionary refinement of the modern vehicle concept. The hallmark brand proportions have been preserved thanks to precisely defined expansion of the exterior dimensions. These also help give the new MINI a compact and powerful appearance which symbolise its agile character, geared consistently towards inspiring driving fun.

The body of the new MINI is 3 821 millimetres long (MINI Cooper S: 3 850 millimetres), 1 727 millimetres wide and 1 414 millimetres wide. This makes it 98 millimetres longer, 44 millimetres wider and 7 millimetres higher than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been extended by 28 millimetres to 2 495 millimetres, while the track width has been enlarged at the front by 42 millimetres and at the rear by 34 millimetres to a total of 1 501 millimetres in each case (MINI Cooper S: 1 485 millimetres). Cornering agility and ride comfort benefit from these new dimensions as do the amount of space available to occupants and the luggage compartment volume. The extended adjustment range of the front seats, a seat surface lengthened by 23 millimetres and a perceptible increase in shoulder room provide more foot space and freedom of movement as well as optimised entry comfort for rear passengers. Luggage compartment volume has been increased by 51 litres to 211 litres.

Like its proportions, the car's hallmark brand styling and the three-way separation of body structure that is so typical of MINI both contribute to its unmistakable appearance. The corpus, greenhouse and roof on top are clearly separated from one another in visual terms. The glass surface with the dark body columns forms a harmonious cover extending across the entire automobile. From the side view, the window graphic tapering off to the rear creates a dynamic wedge shape which is suggestive of the forward thrust characterising the new MINI.

The wide track and short overhangs emphasise the vehicle's corpus more strikingly than ever before as it sits powerfully on top of the wheels. The athletic stature of the new MINI is additionally underscored by the visual link between the front and rear wheel arches. This is created by means of a striking sill line along with a character line running above and virtually parallel to it in the side view. The two lines feature a dynamic downward curve at both front and rear, thereby directing attention to the two large wheel arches.

Traditional design features such as the hexagonal contour of the radiator grille, the side indicator surrounds known as side scuttles, the circular headlights, the upright rear light clusters and the black periphery around the bottom edge of the body are reinterpreted. Selected design features are given a particularly high-end emphasis by means of a novel surface design in their specific environment. The contours of the headlamps, rear light clusters and wheel arches are highlighted by means of precise edging. The visual effect of the side scuttle elements and the additional headlights in the front apron is enhanced by means of striking lines on the adjacent surfaces in each case.

The MINI Cooper S draws its model-specific sporty flair from such features as a radiator grille with honeycomb pattern, an additional opening in the bonnet, brake air ducts integrated in the lower air inlets and a separate rear apron with exhaust tailpipes arranged at the centre. In addition to the side scuttle elements, the radiator grille of this model variant now also bears an "S" logo with chrome surround.

Unique in the segment: LED headlamps and adaptive light distribution.
Detailed design revision has been applied to both the classic circular headlamps, featuring a wide chrome ring surround, and the likewise circular additional headlamps integrated in the front apron. The light sources of the headlamps are clearly structured, with the arched turn indicators arranged in the lower section. In the standard version, the daytime driving light and the side light is produced inside the additional headlights, while fog lamps can also be included here as an optional extra.

The new MINI is the first car in its segment to offer the option of LED headlamps. The bright white LED units provide the light source for both low and high beam. They are also surrounded by an LED daylight driving ring, the lower section of which reaches down to the white turn indicators. Another option is an adaptive light distribution function that ensures optimum illumination of the road surface and roadside - depending on situation and route profile - and also includes a turning light. The optional fog lamps are likewise available in halogen or LED, according to preference. In conjunction with the LED headlamps, the rear light clusters also come as LED units.

For the market launch of the new MINI, the selection of exterior body finishes has been extended to include five new colours. The roof and exterior mirror caps can be finished in a contrasting colour - white or black - as an option and at no extra cost. Roof rails are also available for the new MINI for the first time. Other ways of adding a touch of individual style include white or black bonnet stripes and Chrome Line for the exterior.

The interior design: hallmark MINI style, new display and operating concept.
Precise lines, high-end colour and material combinations and modern functionality highlight the orientation of the new MINI towards driving fun and a premium interior ambience. The horizontal structure of the cockpit and the circular or elliptical contours of key features such as air outlets, instruments and door trim elements are classic design components which take on a more sophisticated and especially high-quality form in the new MINI. A new display and operating concept provides the ideal basis for safe, intuitive and convenient control of the driver assistance, infotainment and comfort systems, which have been significantly expanded in terms of the functions available.

The one of the most important new features is the instrument cluster on the steering column. Road speed, engine speed and fuel level are displayed on vertically arranged circular instruments. The speedometer scale includes a colour panel for Check Control messages, vehicle status displays and visual indicators relating to driver assistance systems currently activated.

Key insertion as previously required is no longer necessary in the cockpit of the new MINI. As soon as the key is inside the car, the engine of the new MINI can be started by pressing the toggle-type start/stop button located in the middle of the centre console, which lights up red. Above the toggle switch there are three circular control switches for heating and air conditioning. The operating switches for the headlamps and fog lamps have also been repositioned and are now located on the instrument cluster next to the steering wheel. The electrically controlled power window lifts in the new MINI are integrated in the door trim panels.

 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet, 2014

The Mercedes-Benz has completely revised the Coupé and Cabriolet members of the E-Class family. New additions include powerful and efficient BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines featuring pioneering injection technology and trend-setting assistance systems, which come under the heading "Intelligent drive". These are systems which can help to prevent accidents with crossing vehicles or pedestrians, Active Lane Keeping Assist or anti-glare, permanent high-beam headlamps, for example. Visually, both the Coupé and Cabriolet draw on the new Mercedes-Benz design idiom. Exclusive, luxurious equipment for sublime refinement underlines the close affinity with the E-Class family.

The classic Coupé and the four-seater Cabriolet of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class are amongst the most desirable vehicles at the higher end of the mid-class segment. By combining intelligent, efficient technology with luxurious equipment that offers superb comfort, neither model comprises when it comes to indulging a passion for superlative driving enjoyment. That is why they are regarded as highlights of the successful E-Class family. The design of the exterior and interior alike is fresh and sharp, as befits many of the stand-out new technical aspects.

Design: Sporty, athletic and eye-catching
Mercedes-Benz has further honed the design of the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet as part of the facelift. Clever alterations have given the two model series a brand new face. In so doing, Mercedes-Benz has consistently implemented its new design idiom at the same time as reinterpreting the brand's traditional design values.

The new look of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet is mainly the result of the redesigned front end, with new headlamps comprising all functional elements behind a single headlamp lens. The indicator, position and daytime running lamps sitting atop each pair of headlamp eyes use LED fibre-optic cables that produce a "torch" effect. These striking, curving lighting elements help to reproduce the four-eyed look so typical of the E-Class, and give both Coupé and Cabriolet an unmistakable night design. LED technology is employed for the low beam and daytime running lamps as standard, while customers are also given the option of all-LED headlamps for the first time in this segment.

The front of the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, featuring a sporty, upright radiator grille with central star, clearly spells status, self-assurance and sportiness. Now free of all lighting functions, the restyled bumper with its more pronounced V-shape serves up a fascinating interplay between surfaces of varying curvature with crisp contour lines and soft shapes. It has a sophisticated appearance, while the wing design of its curved spoiler lip clearly underscores the sporty aspirations and dynamism of these agile cars.

All in all, the front end with its sports car grille presents a distinctive, sporty face, but at the same time emphasises the close affinity between the Coupé and Cabriolet and the new E-Class Saloon.

Silhouette with dynamic proportions
The Coupé has classic proportions with a long bonnet, elongated side window design, flat roof line, and muscular tail end. Traditional styling cues that render Mercedes-Benz coupé models so individual and unmistakable give added impact to the two-door model's striking lines - such as the frameless doors and the-outline of the fully retractable side windows without any B-pillars to interrupt the flow.

The 4-seater Cabriolet model also has fully retractable side windows, with structure lines that continuously ascend gently as they run from the front to the boot lid emphasising its clear proportions. The elongated beltline, which merges into the longer-looking tail end, stretches the Cabriolet's flanks and means that it cuts an especially dynamic figure when driving with the roof down. When the soft top is closed, it blends harmoniously into the silhouette to stunning effect, thanks to its flat roof edge and slender C-pillars. The classic fabric soft top additionally bestows the vehicle with a sense of exclusive elegance at the same time as evoking memories of the great four-seater Mercedes-Benz cabriolets of the past. Both the Coupé and the Cabriolet retain the muscular-looking rear wings as a visible sign of the sporty cars' rear-wheel drive and athleticism and a clear declaration of their performance potential.

Broad, distinctive rear end
At the rear, the lights and bumper have been revised. The new, slimmer LED tail lights extending far into the flanks emphasise the vehicle width, and use LED fibre optics to create a distinctive night design that is typical of Mercedes. A third brake light as well as the white-effect number plate lighting also make use of LED technology.

The new broad-looking rear bumper captures the new design idiom and brings it to a powerful, coherent conclusion with a wing attachment with chrome-look trim that appears to be floating. Depending on the specification, the tailpipes are either concealed out of sight or highlighted for the onlooker. The eight-cylinder models as well as models with the optional Exterior Sports package or AMG Sports package have trapezoid-shaped tailpipe trims integrated into the bumper.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet owners can also add some individual visual highlights with an attractive range of new wheels. The four- and six-cylinder variants of both model series ride as standard on wheels measuring 43.2 cm (17 inches), while the eight-cylinder models are fitted with 45.7 cm (18-inch) wheels. Further wheel variants can be specified as optional extras.

The models' sporty, exclusive nature is further underlined by the new special paint finish aragonite silver, which was specially developed for the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet. The soft top colour dark brown has also been introduced with the facelift.

Interior: Exclusive style, high-quality materials
The facelift has had the effect of further reinforcing the cabin's sporty character on the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, at the same time as blending it with a sense of luxury and class. Consequently, the interior combines with the highly expressive exterior to form a harmonious whole.

Inside the vehicles, stylish materials dominate alongside clean-cut surfaces and the two-part trim element that stretches across the entire dashboard. This has the effect of enhancing the interior's feeling of spaciousness and classiness. The trim element is bordered by a silver chrome frame, which goes perfectly with all of the various materials available. These include three fine wood and two aluminium variants, together with black piano lacquer.

The instrument cluster with dials backed in white, which are designed to emphasise the sporty concept, and the head unit's trapezoid-shaped colour TFT display with its high-gloss frame. The affinity to the new E-Class family and the classy, luxurious character are further demonstrated by the analogue clock between the redesigned air outlets, as well as by the controls in matt silver chrome.

Centre console without automatic selector lever
Contributing to the sporty, functional appeal of the interior is the redesigned centre console. In conjunction with the automatic transmission, there is no selector lever positioned here alongside the Controller with its new four-button control panel for the infotainment system. Instead, the automatic transmission is operated via the DIRECT SELECT lever and shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel. This frees up space for stowage facilities in the horizontal part of the centre console. The controls are clearly arranged and designed in silver chrome.

Also to be found in the centre console are the controls for operating the optional Dynamic Handling package, extending and retracting the adjustable rear head restraints and the sunblind for the rear window on the Coupé, and for selecting the transmission mode. Under the centre armrest on the Cabriolet there is a special control console, housing the lever for operating the soft top and the control buttons for simultaneous opening and closing of the windows as well as for the optional AIRCAP system.

The sporty steering wheel
The distinctly sporty three-spoke multifunction steering wheel trimmed in nappa leather with perforated panels, thumbrests and two silver chrome inserts offers supreme ease of operation with its twelve trapezoid-shaped buttons. In conjunction with the AMG Sports package, the three-spoke AMG sports steering wheel with a flattened lower section is fitted. Contrasting red stitching is added on the variant for the AMG Plus Sports package.

 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, 2014

The Mercedes-Benz has completely revised the Saloon and Estate models of the E-Class. As a result, the new E-Class has made a significant step forward when it comes to efficiency and ecology. This comes courtesy of new, powerful BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines featuring sophisticated direct injection technology, a new, efficient six-cylinder engine as well as even more economical diesel engines. In both the Saloon and Estate models, new or optimised assistance systems from the future S-Class are celebrating their world premiere. This powerful development boost is reflected to exciting effect in the design of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. With a new front, new bumpers, and revised side view, it encapsulates efficiency, intelligence and emotional appeal in a visually superior manner. In this way the E-Class is securing its leading position in the luxury class vehicle sector at the very highest level: dynamically elegant, it combines intelligent technology with superior style.

The Saloon and Estate are continuing the success story of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. More than 600,000 examples of the current E-Class Saloon model series have been sold worldwide, and no fewer than 100,000 customers have already opted for the latest version of the Estate. The models of the E-Class are therefore making a significant contribution to the growth of Mercedes-Benz, and are setting clear standards in the areas of safety, design, quality and efficiency.

Radiator variants - classic or sporty
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is available with 2 different front ends: the basic variant and ELEGANCE equipment line come with the classic, three-dimensional Saloon grille with 3-louvre look and Mercedes-Benz star on the bonnet. The AVANTGARDE equipment line, on the other hand, incorporates the sporty front end with central star, and as such boasts an independent, front-end look with a sporty emphasis.

The headlamps have been redesigned and comprise all functional elements with a single headlamp lens. The low-beam headlamps and the daytime running lamps feature LED technology as standard. Full LED headlamps are also available as an option for the first time in this class.

A modified side view with new feature line and repositioned trim strip make both the Saloon and the Estate appear longer. Overall the E-Class not only looks more elongated, but also more elegant yet at the same time dynamic.

The high-tech engines: efficiency meets performance
Both the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon and Estate are available with a broad range of powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines - all fitted with ECO start/stop function. New units include the BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines in the E 200 and E 250, featuring the same sophisticated technology used in the latest six-cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz. Both of the four-cylinder petrol engines meet the future EU6 standard, while the E 250 even complies with the strict criteria of efficiency class A.

The six-cylinder petrol engines in the E 300 and E 400 are also state-of-the-art - and for the first time feature a biturbo drive. The same advanced engine technology enables the V8 in the E 500 to achieve outstanding levels of performance and efficiency.

The four cylinder diesel engines in the E 200 CDI, E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI, well known for their efficiency and featuring the latest injection technology, are now even more economical, thanks among other things to a revised drive train. This is also the case for the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, currently the most economical luxury-class saloon, which in addition to the four-cylinder diesel engine also has a 20 kW (27 hp) electric motor under the bonnet.

The V6 diesel engines in the E 300 BlueTEC and E 350 BlueTEC have been revised and fitted with environmentally friendly and efficient BlueTEC technology, such that they currently already meet the future EU6 emissions standard. Virtually all of the E-Class models with diesel engines fall into efficiency class A, while the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is even classified in efficiency class A+.

The intelligent assistance systems
In the main markets, both the Saloon and Estate models are fitted as standard with COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive brake assist systems. Also forming part of the standard equipment is ATTENTION ASSIST, which is now able to warn of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider speed range, and also inform the driver about his level of fatigue and the amount of driving time which has elapsed since the last break.

Design: Stylish, refined, sporty
As part of the facelift, Mercedes-Benz has sharpened the overall appearance of the E-Class. Intelligent modifications to the design have given the E-Class a new front end and created new, exciting proportions. The modifications have implemented the new Mercedes-Benz design idiom consistently, and reinterpreted the classical design values of the brand using the existing basis. The result is a superior and refined appearance which is still sporty and emotionally appealing.

The headlamps have been redesigned and comprise all functional elements with a single headlamp lens. Flowing light elements within the headlamps help to ensure that the "four-eyed" look which is typical of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been graphically retained, and afford both the Saloon and the Estate an unmistakable night design. The low-beam headlamps and the daytime running lamps feature LED technology as standard. Full LED headlamps are also available as an option for the first time in this class.

Design: two new front ends to choose from
For the first time, the E-Class is available with two different front ends: the basic variant and ELEGANCE equipment line come with the classic, three-dimensional Saloon grille with 3-louvre look and Mercedes-Benz star on the bonnet. The AVANTGARDE equipment line, on the other hand, incorporates the sporty front end with central star and twin louvre which is softly shaped around the star recess, and as such boasts an independent, front-end look with a sporty emphasis.

The swept-back bonnet and front bumper have also been redesigned. With its flowing lines, the bonnet follows the new design idiom in a sleek and very straightforward manner. Its contours merge elegantly and smoothly into the frame surrounding the radiator trim and the headlamps. The newly shaped bumper, which is now free of all light functions, presents an exciting shift between differently curved areas with precisely executed contour lines and soft shapes. It has a modern appearance and with the wing design of its curved spoiler lip subtly underscores the sporty aspirations of the E-Class.

A new line visually stretches the E-Class
From the side, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class appears visibly stretched. This comes courtesy of a redesigned line which starts on the rear door and runs dynamically beneath the structure line through to the tail light. In this way it visually underscores the structure line with its typical "undercut". The redesigned side view visually benefits the vehicle in terms of length, and also makes it look broader when viewed from the rear. The new line is a stylistic feature of the new design idiom, which is based on beautifully stretched, voluminous shapes with convex/concave areas, accentuated by sharp lines.

The three-dimensional side trim has been repositioned and moved downwards. As a result, the greenhouse appears flatter, despite the window areas remaining unchanged. This has given rise to visually new, more dynamic proportions.

The same intelligent design modifications have also given the Estate a more superior and more dynamic appearance. Here, elegant, chrome-plated roof rails provide an exciting line. The roof rails are chrome-plated in all design and equipment lines, while the mounting hardware is finished in black. Concealed B and C-pillars featuring "frame under glass" and a steep D-pillar tapering downwards characterise the closed look of the Estate model's greenhouse.

Broad, distinctive rear end
At the rear, the lights and bumper have been revised. The new horizontally structured LED tail lights with new two-tone look (divided into ¾ red and ¼ white) emphasise the width, and with fibre optics create a characteristic night design which is typical of Mercedes. A third brake light - integrated into the tailgate spoiler above the rear window in the case of the Estate - as well as the number plate illumination, also make use of LED technology.

In the Estate, thanks to the steeply angled, narrow D-pillar, a large, broad tailgate provides for a large loading aperture and therefore ease of loading and good usability of the luggage compartment.

The new rear bumper captures the new design idiom and brings it to a consistent conclusion with a wing attachment which appears to float. Depending on the engine, the tailpipes are concealed out of sight or are highlighted to the onlooker. The eight-cylinder models as well as the AVANTGARDE line feature rectangular tailpipe trim integrated into the bumper. This is also the case for the optional Exterior Sports package as well as the AMG Sports package.

E-Class owners can also apply some individual visual highlights with an attractive range of new wheels. The base variant comes with wheels measuring 40.6 cm (16 inches), while the ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE lines are fitted with 43.2 cm (17-inch) wheels. In conjunction with the Exterior Sports package, wheels measuring 45.7 cm (18 inches) are fitted, and the variant with the AMG Sports package comes with AMG light-alloy wheels measuring 45.7 cm (18 inches). As an option, wheels with a 48.3 cm (19-inch) diameter are also available.

The elegantly dynamic style is also highlighted with some new colours: covelline blue, dolomite brown and hyacinth red are new additions to the range of paint finishes.

The Interior: Exclusive style, high-quality materials
Mercedes-Benz has carefully revised the interior of the E-Class in such a way that, together with the expressive, modern exterior, it forms a harmonious unit.

The new, two-part trim on the dashboard is what first catches the eye: it stretches across the entire width of the interior and as such visually underscores the generous sense of space. It is bordered by a high-quality silver chrome frame and, in conjunction with all of the high-quality materials available for the trim, creates a consistent overall look. Choices available include fine woods (high-gloss light brown burr walnut, open-pore brown ash) or a new aluminium variant with textured grain. All of the materials can be freely selected, irrespective of the equipment line.

Other eye-catching elements include the instrument cluster and high-gloss framed central display. In the standard and ELEGANCE line models, the instrument cluster features black backplates, while the AVANTGARDE line models have silver backplates. A new design for the air vents, an analogue clock between the two central air vents as well as redesigned controls beneath the head unit all serve to highlight the overall high-quality feel of the interior of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Precise joints and carefully defined curves also make a contribution in this respect too.

An enhanced sense of perceived quality also comes courtesy of the surfaces in the interior of the new E-Class. In all equipment variants they feature a fine grain which boasts a high-quality look and feel and is not only elegant to look at but also easy to clean. As an option, the dashboard and beltline can also be finished in ARTICO man-made leather.

 Mazda 6 Wagon, 2013

The Mazda is reaching for greater heights in a flagship for a new generation and a new level of driving pleasure. With the distinct design, intuitive functionality and exceptional responsiveness that are essential elements of every Mazda. But also blending a dynamic, emotional appeal with the composure mandatory for Mazda's top model. This, of course, posed challenges for designers and engineers as they sought to balance potentially conflicting attributes like form and function, performance and efficiency, comfort and practicality, uniqueness and mass appeal. And in the all-important reputation-making CDsegment, no less.

The SKYACTIV powertrains provide unrivalled linearity and responsiveness. They're a perfect match for the new Mazda 6's equally precise handling, founded on agile yet stable steering and suspension feedback that puts the driver in absolute control. This model marks the latest evolution of Sustainable Zoom-Zoom, Mazda's long-term vision to develop technology for exceptionally safe and environmentally friendly vehicles that also provide the greatest possible driving pleasure. To deliver top-class fuel economy, the all-new Mazda 6 combines the lightweight design common to all SKYACTIV components with uniquely innovative engines and transmissions and Mazda's unique i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system.

It's remarkably safe thanks to the SKYACTIV-Body, whose highly rigid structure absorbs impact energy and channels it away from the cabin for segment-leading crash protection. Add in the enviable range of active safety technology, and you have an environment where the driver can concentrate on the driving experience while passengers relax and enjoy the ride.

Design-Moving People
As Mazda's next flagship, the all-new Mazda 6 had to be even better than it's predecessor - a model that already achieved top ratings from European customers as well as the media. With striking looks and harmonious forms and textures alongside the uniqueness that precludes the Mazda badge.

At the same time, it needed to attract the broad customer appeal obligatory for CD-segment sedans and wagons in Europe. Mazda designers undertook this complex challenge, working closely with company engineers to make their visions both feasible and highly functional. The result is a new Mazda 6 that will delight customers with its combination of superior build quality and functional, practical beauty that should continue to please the senses well into the future. One look at the all-new Mazda 6 should eradicate any doubts about the skills of Mazda's designers, long known for their unique ability to express motion when shaping vehicles. Their latest evolution is called "KODO - Soul of Motion", a design theme inspired by the movements of animals in the wild - and the look for the new generation of Mazdas. Mazda believes it has captured KODO's purest essence in the all-new Mazda 6, the production model born of the Mazda Takeri concept first showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show in late 2011. Sedan or wagon, it combines a muscular anatomy and vitality with a functional allure that is certain to gain broad market appreciation - and a level of quality that sets it apart.

The Exterior: Shapes that enrich the senses
This is a big achievement in asegment that is so competitive in Europe, representing 6.2 % of the European passenger car market. When designing the Mazda 6, the aim was to come up with a body that clearly sets the vehicle apart from conventional thinking, as unveiled on the Takeri and Shinari concepts, while still furnishing the vehicle with unmistakable dignity and purpose.

The prominent fenders and compactlooking cabin set towards the rear highlight the large-diameter 19-inch aluminium wheels, which only add to the car's composed exterior. The five sets of contoured spokes underline the sense of dynamism and light, effortless motion. And they don't just look good, either. Engineers worked with designers to improve stiffness and thus resistance to deformation. The result is superior handling coupled with reduced noise, vibration and harshness.

The five sets of contoured spokes underline the sense of dynamism and light, effortless motion. And they don't just look good, either. Engineers worked with designers to improve stiffness and thus resistance to deformation. The result is superior handling coupled with reduced noise, vibration and harshness. In what is undoubtedly some of their best work yet, Mazda's world-class design team came up with distinctive bodylines whose impressions vary - a sence of speed here, more relaxed there - depending on how the light falls. In doing so, they focused on the interplay between light and shadow, designing a car that one never tires of looking at.

The all-new Mazda 6 is the company's first production model to incorporate LEDs and a new halo ring light into the headlamps. The ring, which surrounds each headlight, accentuates the forward looking stance and mature fearlessness, while the LEDs visually extend the signature wings outwards, adding to the sense of speed.

The Interior: Stunning simplicity
Open the door of the Mazda 6, and this exciting yet dignified consistency continues on the inside. Interior designers paid meticulous attention to detail, enhancing shapes and textures as well as appearances. What they came up with is a harmonious, uncluttered space with an immediately perceptible level of genuine quality and tasteful coordination fitting for a flagship: An interior as stunning as it is sensible.

The various controls received the same finishing. The produces a clean, consistent look throughout the all new Mazda 6 while at the same time making knobs and switches easier to locate visually and therefore operate. Parts like the door handles were given a handpolished aluminium look, with soft materials used for elements that occupants touch the most, such as the steering wheel and armrest. The use of hard plastics was kept to a minimum, with a high-quality finish that underscores the refinement of the Mazda 6 interior while offering practical benefits to driver and passenger alike.
