 Cadillac ATS, 2013

The Cadillac ATS is a new expression of Cadillac's Art & Science execution philosophy, built on a foundation of driving dynamics and mass efficiency. It is the most agile and lightweight Cadillac, with one of the lowest curb weights in the segment - less than 3,400 pounds (1,542 kg).
The rear-drive ATS brings Cadillac's blend of technologically driven performance, elegance and design to a new audience of spirited drivers. Its sophisticated driving experience is enhanced with Cadillac CUE, a comprehensive, in-vehicle user experience that merges intuitive design with industry-first controls and commands for information and media data.

Germany's famed Nürburgring served as one of the key testing grounds, along with additional roads, racetracks and laboratories around the globe, ATS engineers balanced performance with Cadillac's trademark refinement. Contributing components and features:
  • Nearly 50/50 weight balance
  • Cadillac's first five-link independent rear suspension using lightweight, high-strength steel and efficient straight link designs
  • A multi-link double-pivot Mac Pherson-strut front suspension with direct-acting stabilizer bar
  • Driver-adjustable FE3 sport suspension with Magnetic Ride Control real-time damping
  • Underbody aerodynamic shields
  • Premium (belt driven) electric variable-effort steering gear from ZF Steering Systems
  • Four-channel ABS with available Brembo performance brakes
  • Available all-wheel drive

A broad lineup of engines - including two four-cylinders and a V-6 for North America - delivers strong power to the Cadillac ATS and capitalizes on the car's lightweight structure to complement its performance with efficiency. The optional engines include an all-new 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 270 horsepower (201 kW) and Cadillac's award-winning 3.6L V-6, estimated at 318 horsepower (237 kW).

At 135hp/L, the new 2.0T is one of the most power-dense engines in the industry, topping engines from European competitors. Cadillac ATS will offer both manual and automatic transmission options, along with rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations.

The Cadillac ATS will deliver peak highway fuel economy of more than 30 mpg.
A spirit of lightness and balance
Making the Cadillac ATS one of the segment's lightest cars was a fundamental criterion for and the guiding principle during its development, but it was done in a nuanced manner that ensures a refined driving experience.

Optimizing the Cadillac ATS's mass was the result of a four-pronged philosophy that included strict adherence to original architectural goals, measured load management throughout the vehicle, benchmarking components to see if lighter solutions were available and an overall culture that "weighed" the mass of every component in the car against all aspects of its development.

An aluminum hood, magnesium engine mount brackets and even lightweight, natural-fiber door trim panels contribute to the Cadillac ATS's low overall mass - and reflect the systematic approach of evaluating every gram that went into the car. But some weight was deemed not only beneficial, but essential to the Cadillac ATS's driving experience. An example is the cast iron differential: Engineers found they could improve fuel economy with a cast iron differential rather than a lighter aluminum version.

And while the rear suspension is mostly steel, the focus on load management and straight links enabled significant weight savings without using alternate materials. This helps offset the weight of the engine and transmission at the front of the vehicle, helping the Cadillac ATS deliver its near-perfect 50/50 weight balance, while also contributing to lower noise and vibration. A similar approach was taken on the wheels, where extra structural aluminum was strategically added to further reduce vibration.

Buick Enclave, 2013

The Buick introduced the new 2013 Enclave, an evolution of the industry's best-selling three-row luxury crossover. It offers new styling, new safety technologies, in-vehicle connectivity and a more refined driving experience.

The LED daytime running lamps and LED tail lamps complement a more sculpted exterior design. The interior is more contemporary, with ambient lighting and Intelli Link in-vehicle communications with touch-screen control and navigation. The industry's first front center air bag system and new dual-flow front struts highlight the safety and performance enhancements.

The Enclave is offered in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models, and powered by a direct-injected 3.6L V-6 and an updated six-speed automatic transmission that contribute to the more refined driving experience. Buick's Quiet Tuning engineering process reduces, blocks and absorbs unwanted noise from the Enclave's cabin, making it quieter than a Lexus RX350.

Buick Enclave's sculpted styling redefined Buick's design language upon its introduction more than five years ago. The 2013 model adds new signature cues:
  • New front fascia with LED daytime running lamps
  • New headlamp design, with standard Xenon high-intensity discharge lamps (HID) and LED accent lighting. Articulating headlamps are available
  • New hood and black-chrome waterfall grille
  • New rear fascia design with integrated exhaust outlets
  • New LED tail lamps
  • New 19-inch and 20-inch aluminum wheel designs
  • Monochromatic exterior appearance with chrome accents.

The Buick Enclave's new appearance is instantly recognizable as a modern Buick and the LED lighting elements enhance its technologically advanced presence. The blue translucent rings around the Xenon HID headlamps are Buick design cues found on other models, adding distinction across the brand's lineup.

At the rear, the exhaust outlets are framed with a chrome finish within the rear fascia, for an integrated appearance that exemplifies Buick's attention to detail. New LED taillamps provide a safety benefit by illuminating more quickly than conventional bulbs when the brakes are applied.

Harmonious interior environment
The 2013 Enclave's interior is defined by luxurious amenities and high-quality materials, with changes that create a more contemporary ambience and support the integration of Buick IntelliLink.

Highlights:
  •     New ice blue LED ambient lighting around the dash highlights Enclave's flowing lines, emphasizing the cabin's spaciousness
  •     Eight-way power front driver and passenger seats with four-way adjustable head restraints emphasize seat comfort
  •     Details including soft touch materials and live stitching throughout the cabin, as well as true chrome accents
  •     Four interior color combinations are available with complementing wood tones, including a new Cocoa leather combination
  •     A new "center stack" with standard IntelliLink LCD display, tri-zone climate system, capacitive touch controls and available navigation system.
The new center stack was developed for easy, intuitive interaction with the new IntelliLink system, along with redundant controls on the genuine Mahogany-accented steering wheel. The tri-zone climate system's new controls are designed to be more intuitive, too, with easier, at-a-glance operation, bold digital temperature readouts and larger controls that are easier to operate with gloves.

Buick Enclave offers three rows of seating, available in seven- or eight-passenger configurations. The second-row seats feature the SmartSlide system, which allows easier entry to the third row, with the pull of a single handle. There is 23.3 cubic feet (660 liters) of cargo space behind the third row and a maximum of 115.2 cubic feet (3,263 liters) of cargo space available when the second and third rows are folded. That's more than the Mercedes-Benz R Class, Infiniti JX, Acura MDX, Lincoln MKT, Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90.

Bugatti Veyron Black Bess, 2014

With its fifth model in the six-part "Les Légendes de Bugatti" (Bugatti Legends) Edition, Bugatti has revived the legendary Type 18 "Black Bess", which went down in automotive history as one of the first ever street legal super sports cars. At the 2014 Auto China motor show in Beijing the French luxury manufacturer will be presenting as a world premiere the modern interpretation of the Type 18, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse "Black Bess". As one of the fastest road vehicles in the world at the time, the Type 18 "Black Bess" is a direct forerunner of today's world speed record-holding Bugatti Veyron. As with all models in the Edition, the current Legends model is limited to a run of three vehicles and is available for a net price of € 2.15 million. Of the four Legend models already presented, all twelve vehicles have been sold.

The Type 18 was one of the most important Bugattis of the pre-war era, both ahead of its time and in a league of its own thanks to its impressive technical features. With a 4-cylinder in-line engine and five litre capacity, the vehicle was capable of producing over 100 PS. With a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph), a feat deemed virtually unbelievable for the times, the Type 18 was a true racing thoroughbred and the fastest road vehicle around.

The Type 18 was driven in races by company founder Ettore Bugatti himself; indeed he secured a win in his class in the important 1912 Mont Ventoux hill climb. Bugatti limited the production run for this model to just seven vehicles and sold them to an extremely select group of customers. One of these customers was the famed and celebrated French aviation pioneer Roland Garros, who successfully crossed the Mediterranean in an airplane in 1912 after racking up a host of successes at a variety of aviation events. It was Ettore's victory at Mont Ventoux which drew Garros' attention to the Type 18. A lover of speed through and through, Garros was looking for a car which would enable him to travel as fast on land as he could in the air. The Type 18 was an obvious choice. In counting Garros amongst his customers, Ettore Bugatti had landed a major marketing coup.

The Bugatti delivered the two-seater bearing the vehicle identification number 474 to Garros on 18 September 1913. This Type 18, later named after the English racehorse "Black Bess", is one of only three of the seven vehicles still remaining. Today, it can be found in the Louwman Museum, a private collection on show at The Hague in the Netherlands. Evert Louwman has kindly made the historic Type 18 "Black Bess" specially available for the world premiere of the current "Black Bess" Legend Vitesse at the 2014 Auto China in Beijing.

As is the case with all of the Legend vehicles, the "Black Bess" is based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. Its 1,200 PS, 8 litre W16 engine achieves an unparalleled torque of 1,500 Nm at 3,000-5,000 rpm, and can accelerate from 0-100 km in 2.6 seconds. With a maximum speed of 408.84 km/h with the roof down, the Vitesse is the fastest production roadster ever built.
Design - high-quality materials used for the exterior, and international debut of innovative interior detailing

The Exterior
The body of the "Black Bess" Vitesse is constructed entirely of carbon fibre and, just like its historical predecessor, is painted completely black. The gold-coloured accents that make the Type 18 "Black Bess" so unmistakable are reflected in exquisite fashion on the modern Bugatti. For example, some of the Bugatti's body components are coated in 24-carat gold. Indeed, this precious material has been used for the striking Bugatti horseshoe, which gleams against the background of the black front grille, creating a truly expressive front view for the Vitesse. This is reinforced by gold-coloured stripes that start below the headlights and radiate out over the front wings towards the rear, before tapering off at the end of the door line.

Sporting a similarly brilliant gold finish are the EB logo on the rear of the vehicle and the hub covers on the black rims, which also bear the initials of the company's founder, Ettore Bugatti, in black. And let's not forget the tank and oil caps, which have been engraved with the "Black Bess" nameplate and elegantly finished with gold paint.

The Interior
The interior of the "Black Bess" Legend Vitesse has been fully upholstered using the finest leather. The headliner, footwell, seats, elongated centre console and rear bulkhead are bedecked in a light "Beige" tone, with the dashboard, dash panel, door trim panel and cowl panel offering a discreet contrast in "Havanna". Clad in red "Crimson" leather, the steering wheel rim draws a clear reference to the historic Type 18 "Black Bess". This accent has also been picked up and continued in the red decorative stitching on the outer bolsters of the seats and in the seat belts.

The capabilities of Bentley's flagship Grand Tourer, the Continental GT Speed are cemented further with enhancements to its supercar performance and unrivalled refinement.

Bentley's iconic 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine has been pushed even further, now developing 635 PS (626 bhp / 467 kW) and a record 820 Nm of torque. The new Bentley Continental GT Speed coupe reaches a top speed of 206 mph (331 km/h) - the fastest production Bentley ever - while the revised convertible can reach 203 mph (327 km/h). With its Speed chassis setup of a lowered and stiffened suspension, the most powerful car in the Continental family offers the most high performance and luxurious Grand Touring experience.

The extra dynamic performance of the Continental flagship model is complemented by a more distinctive visual presence. The sharp front splitter, discrete side skirts and elegant rear diffuser are finished to match the exterior paint colour for the first time. The new GT Speed is given a more signature look through the use of a dark tint finish applied to the 21" Speed wheel design, headlamps and tail lamps. The exterior modifications are completed with red-painted brake callipers and a stylish chrome "Speed" badge fitted to the front fenders, while a new signature Speed paint colour of Candy Red is now available.

The visual changes continue inside the cabin of the GT Speed, starting with a completely new colour split reserved exclusively for the Speed models. Starting with a dark monotone interior, accent stripes in a contrasting colour are applied across the doors, rear panels, fascia wings, inner console and gear lever. Matching contrasting stitching is then sewn to various aspects of the cabin, with a new cost option to continue contrast stitching through the diamond quilting of the seats and doors. Speed branding is also sewn to the front and rear headrests, while a subtle yet elegant chrome "Speed" badge adorns the passenger side fascia panel.

 Audi A8, 2014

The superior design, hand-built quality, systematic lightweight construction and an abundance of high-end technologies: Audi presents the comprehensively updated A8, its successful flagship, at the 2013 IAA in Frankfurt am Main. The engine lineup has once again become more powerful and efficient; new assistance systems and the innovative Matrix LED headlights make driving more composed than ever.

The A8 makes Audi among the innovation leaders in the worldwide luxury segment, the most demanding automobile category. One great strength of the big sedan is its low weight. The Audi A8 3.0 TFSI with the normal wheelbase has a curb weight of just 1,830 kilograms (4,034.46 lb) - best-in-class for models with all-wheel drive.

The key factor in its lightweight construction is the body, which except for the B-pillars is made entirely of aluminum. An Audi Space Frame (ASF) design, it tips the scales at just 231 kilograms (509.27 lb), roughly 40 percent less than a comparable steel construction. The ASF body also makes it possible to reduce weight in many other areas, from the brakes to the fuel tank.

Length (5.14 meters [16.86 ft]), wheelbase (2.99 meters [9.81 ft]), width (1.95 meters [6.40 ft]) and height (1.46 meters [4.79 ft]) remain unchanged, giving the Audi A8 the sportiest look in the segment. The A8 L gains an additional 13 centimeters (5.12 in) in both length and wheelbase. Equipped with a TDI engine, both body variants have a drag coefficient of just 0.26. This same figure with a TFSI engine is 0.27.

In updating the A8, Audi paid great attention to the acoustics. Additional noise damping measures reduce the already low interior noise level even further. The trunk now has a maximum of 520 liters (18.36 cubic feet) and can be loaded substantially better thanks to the altered layout. The optional power trunk closing assist means that the entire car can be locked at the touch of a button.

Dynamic, harmoniously elegant - the big sedan's design has become even more expressive. The engine hood, the single-frame grille and the front bumper are even more sculptured and precise; the lower edge of the headlights is straight. In the German market, LED headlights are standard in all models with a V8 engine.

Audi also offers the headlights with optional Matrix LED technology, which sets new benchmarks with respect to design and technology. With these headlights, the high-beam unit is made up of 25 individual segments. The small light-emitting diodes, which work in conjunction with lenses and reflectors connected in series, are activated and deactivated or dimmed individually according to the situation. This enables the system to react precisely to other cars, which it recognizes using a camera, and always illuminate the road brightly. Additional features of the new headlights are the intelligent cornering light, new-look daytime running lights and dynamic turn signals.

The LED lights at the rear of the new Audi A8 have also become flatter and are joined together by a continuous chrome strip. In all models except the S8, the redesigned bumper houses two rhomboid tailpipes. Chrome strips in the lower section of the body, fine inserts in the door handles and high-gloss black window frames round out the distinctive features. There is a choice of 12 exterior colors, including five new ones. Wheels are available in sizes up to 21 inches with 275/35-series tires.

The engines: more power with greater efficiency
Besides the S8, A8 L W12 quattro and A8 hybrid models, the new Audi A8 will be offered in the German market with two TFSI gasoline engines and two TDI units. A package of measures to reduce friction reduce fuel consumption by as much as ten percent, and most engines have also seen an increase in power. All engines already satisfy the requirements of the Euro 6 standard.

Under the hood of the A8 3.0 TFSI quattro is a V6 engine whose mechanical compressor can be deactivated. Power output is now 228 kW (310 hp), an increase of 15 kW (20 hp). The V6 accelerates the standard wheelbase version of the sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically restricted to 250 km/h (155.34 mph). It consumes on average 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers (30.16 US mpg), corresponding to 183 grams CO2 per kilometer (294.51 g/mile).

The twin-turbo V8 in the A8 4.0 TFSI quattro now produces 320 kW (435 hp), 11 kW (15 hp) more than before. Key performance data: from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.5 seconds; average fuel consumption 9.1 liters per 100 kilometers (25.85 US mpg), corresponding to 213 grams CO2 per kilometer (342.79 g/mile). The Audi cylinder on demand (COD) system plays a major role in this efficiency by deactivating four of the eight cylinders under part load.

With average fuel consumption of 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers (39.87 US mpg), corresponding to 155 grams CO2 per kilometer (249.45 g/mile), the 3.0 TDI clean diesel set a new record in the all-wheel-drive luxury segment. The V6 diesel engine's output has been bumped up 6 kW (8 hp) to 190 kW (258 hp). It now accelerates the sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.9 seconds.

When it comes to torque, the 4.2 TDI clean diesel tops the A8 lineup, delivering 850 Nm (626.93 lb-ft) to the crankshaft. Audi has boosted its output by a whopping 25 kW (34 hp) to 283 kW (385 hp). Equipped with the powerful V8 diesel, the A8 completes the standard sprint in 4.7 seconds, and average fuel consumption is 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers (31.79 US mpg), which corresponds to 194 grams CO2 per kilometer (312.21 g/mile).

Powertrain: tiptronic and quattro
All variants of the model series are equipped with a fast and smooth-shifting, eight-speed tiptronic. The transmission, which can be controlled electronically using an elegant selector lever as well as paddles on the steering wheel, works in conjunction with the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. The latter is standard in the A8 series (except for the A8 hybrid). If desired, Audi will combine quattro all-wheel drive with the optional sport differential on the rear axle. The power can then be distributed between the rear wheels as needed for even more agile handling. The sport differential is standard in the S8 and the A8 4.2 TDI clean diesel quattro.

The Audi A8 owes its sporty character in large part to the sophisticated chassis. Axle load distribution is balanced, and all wheel control arms are aluminum. The Audi drive select system, which enables the driver to influence the function of various technical modules such as the steering and the accelerator characteristic, is standard. It also controls the adaptive air suspension with adaptive damping, which adjusts the body's ride height to the speed driven. Audi also offers the air suspension with a sporty setup upon request.

The power steering now uses an efficient electromechanical drive that reduces fuel consumption and also enables the use of numerous assistance systems. The optional dynamic steering varies its ratio with the car's speed. All brake discs are internally vented. Carbon fiber ceramic brake discs are available for V8 models, the S8 and the A8 L W12.

One new component of Audi's lightweight construction technology are the 9J x 20 aluminum-technology wheels. These are based on forged support wheels that are joined via a special process to a ten-spoke design element of high-strength polymer. This technology gives designers the freedom to use large-area, yet three-dimensional designs.

In keeping with Acura's commitment to delivering a world-class audio experience, the TLX can be equipped with a 455-watt, 10-speaker Acura/ELS Studio® Premium Audio System, engineered specifically for the TLX by legendary recording engineer Elliot Scheiner.

TLX models featuring the new 3.5-liter V-6 engine utilize the advanced Electronic Gear Selector, using an intuitive push-button array in place of a traditional gear lever, freeing up center-console space while presenting a premium futuristic appearance. All TLX models incorporate the Electronic Parking Brake with Automatic Brake Hold, which retains brake pressure when the vehicle is stopped, simplifying stop-and-go driving in heavy traffic or on steep hills.

New TLX Powertrains
At the heart of the TLX's athletic sports-sedan performance capabilities are two new powertrains, utilizing direct-injection, V-TEC or i-VTEC valvetrains with Variable Timing Control (VTC) or Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) and low-friction technologies to deliver higher output, more linear and responsive power delivery and anticipated class-leading fuel-economy ratings.

The direct-injected 2.4-liter DOHC i-VTEC in-line 4 produces a peak 206 horsepower and 182 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to an all-new 8-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (8DCT) with torque converter, the world's first DCT to be paired with a torque converter on a production vehicle. The DCT, with its closely spaced ratios, ultra-quick shifts and automatic rev-matching downshifts, gives the 2.4-liter TLX an aggressively sporting yet refined feel. The torque converter provides exceptionally smooth operation in stop-and-go situations, plus it offers off-the-line torque multiplication for substantially improved initial acceleration that a conventional DCT cannot match. The new transmission also features Sequential SportShift.

The direct-injected 3.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC V-6 incorporates Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), with the ability to deactivate three of the engine's six cylinders, for improved fuel efficiency. The aluminum-alloy 24-valve engine produces a peak 290 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque, gains of 10 horsepower and 13 lb.-ft. versus the 2014 TL 3.5-liter engine. The engine is mated to a new 9-speed automatic transmission featuring Sequential SportShift. The new 9-speed unit is substantially lighter than the 6-speed automatic in the outgoing TL, with a wider overall ratio range and more closely spaced individual gear ratios to enhance both performance and fuel efficiency. No competitive vehicle in the segment offers as many transmission ratios.

The TLX SH-AWD also incorporates a model-exclusive idle-stop capability for improved fuel efficiency. And a new 28-volt Active Control engine mount significantly reduces engine vibration during restarts.

The TLX equipped with the 2.4-liter engine has an anticipated EPA fuel-economy rating of 24/35/28 mpg city/hwy/combined. The TLX two-wheel-drive with the 3.5-liter V-6 has an anticipated EPA fuel-economy rating of 21/34/25 mpg (+1 city/+5 highway versus the two-wheel-drive 2014 TL). The TLX SH-AWD has an anticipated EPA fuel-economy rating of 21/31/25 (+3 city/+5 highway versus the 2014 TL SH-AWD).

The sophisticated contemporary presence of the new Volvo S80. The new front and rear bumpers create a 'stretched' effect to make it look wider and lower. New rectangular Daytime Running Lights at the front give the S80 nose a more contemporary look, while the rounded off classic Volvo lights at the rear visually pull the car down to the ground. The Volvo S80 can be fitted with expressive 19-inch wheels without loss of comfort.

It is the attention to detail that gives the Volvo S80 its enhanced sophistication. The Executive interior package is the highest level of all-inclusive luxury, blending craftsmanship with technology, while the Inscription is a bespoke palette of options that gives the customer the opportunity to truly design the car to his or her personal taste.

And under the skin, at the heart of the best driving experiences is a great chassis. The Volvo S80 buyer can choose from three chassis types - Comfort, Lowered Sport Chassis and Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept).

The lower fuel consumption
Volvo Car Group continues to lead the industry when it comes to fuel efficiency and CO2 actions across the model and engine range.

The fuel consumption of the 115 hp, four-cylinder D2 diesel in the new Volvo S80 with a manual gearbox is now down to a class-leading 4.1 l/100 km (EU Combined, preliminary figures), which translates into CO2 emissions of 108 g/km - unthinkable in a car of this size only a few years ago. The corresponding figures with the automatic gearbox are 4.1 l/100km and 109 g/km (preliminary figures). To emphasise the scale of the engineers' achievement, this is the same CO2 emission level for Volvo's largest saloon as for the company's smallest car, the C30 DRIVe, only three years ago.

The new Volvo V70 D2 has class-leading fuel consumption at 4.2 l/100 km (111 g/km) with the manual and 4.3 l/100 km (112 g/km) with the automatic gearbox (preliminary figures).
The automatic D3 (136 hp) and D4 (163 hp) versions of the Volvo S80 now have CO2 emissions of 129 g (4.9 l/100 km). The corresponding figures for the V70 D3 and D4 are 130 g (4.9 l/100 km).

In the new Volvo XC70, both the D5 (215 hp) and the D4 (163 hp) versions with manual gearbox and All Wheel Drive come with fuel consumption at 5.3 l/100km (139 g/km).

The S80 with the 1.6-litre GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine T4 (180 hp) and automatic gearbox has fuel a consumption of 7.1 l/100km (165 g/km). The corresponding figure for the V70 T4 is 7.2 l/100 km (168 g/km).
